28th June 2004. 12 Wakefield Athletes Chosen to Represent West Yorkshire Schools.
12 Athletes from schools in the Wakefield District have been chosen to represent West Yorkshire in the English Schools Championships at Gateshead on 9th/10th July :- 1500m Joseph Townsend (Silcoates JB), 200m Hannah Bird (Hemsworth JG), 200m Mikaela Harrison (St Wilfs JG) 75m Hurd. Rachel Wilson (Ossett JG), Disc Hannah Evenden (WGHS JG), L.J. Jessica Wilson (Ossett JG) 1500m Nathan Elliot (STAB IB), 800m Paul Rice (Cathedral IB), Disc Chloe Beckett (Castleford IG), H.J. Tiffeny Lyons (Normanton IG), T.J. Laura Teasdale (Ossett IG), 400m Mitchell Rhodes (QEGS SB).

26/27th June 2004. Naida Bromley wins North East Schools Heptathlon Championships.
Representing West Yorkshire Schools Naida easily won the Senior Girls Heptathlon with a score of 4,436 points.

27th June 2004. Good Performances and New Club Relay Record in Young Athletes League
There were many fine performances in this match including a New U17 Men's 4 x 400m Relay Club Record of 3 mins 40.1s. Rosie Hackney was also in great form winning the U13 Girls 75m, 150m and Long Jump, all close to the club records.

27th June 2004. Zara Hohn Smashes Club U20 & U17 Hurdles Record.
Although only an U17, Zara came a magnificent 4th in the AAA U20 Championships at Bedford, twice breaking the club record in the heats and then again in the final. Her final time was a New Club U20 & U17 100m Hurdles Record of 14.01s, a time that makes her the clear leader in the UK U17 rankings.

26th June 2004. Combined team win Northern Knockout Cup Semi-Final.
The combined mens and womens team easily won their semi-final match at Rotherham, although it was the girls who had most success. They had many victories on the track and in the field, and Shirley Griffiths continued her comeback with victories in the 800m & 1500m. Team Result :- Wakefield 192, Rotherham 164, Doncaster 154, Hull 148, Lincoln 130, Boston 109, Derby 74.

26th June 2004. Two Club Records in BMC races at Manchester.
In the BMC Nike Grand Prix races at Sports City Manchester, Charlene Snelgrove improved her 800m PB for the 2nd time in a month, setting a New Club 800m Record of 2 min 03.97 secs, a time that ranks her in the top 10 in the UK. Sarah Beevers ran in the 3000m Steeplchase, setting a New Club Record of 11 min 26.11 secs. There were many other fine performances, including a new 1500m PB of 4m 05.01s for U17 Nathan Elliot, and an 800m PB of 1m 58.46s for U17 Paul Rice, which would have been a club record a week earlier! 22nd June 2004. New Club U17 800m Record for Nathan Elliot.
In the BMC races at Stretford Nathan ran a New Club U17 800m Record of 1 min 57.53 secs. Running against senior athletes he finished 4th in the 'B' race. Results from Stretford from the British Milers Club.

20th June 2004. Junior Girls finish Third again in National Junior League.
In the third match of the National Junior League Northern Premier division at Wigan, the girls once again put on a great team performance and finished third again. New 2nd Claim member Kim Wainwright showed what a talent she is by running a New Club U20 400m Record of 57.2 secs in her first race for the club! She also finished 2nd in the A 100m, with Zara Hohn winning the B 100m as well as coming 3rd in a top class 100m Hurdles. Tiff Lyons was our only A string winner in the High Jump. With one meeting left the team are virtually certain to finish in the top 4 and qualify for the national final in September.

20th June 2004. Another fine Half Marathon time for Julie O'Mara.
Julie continued her excellent form on the roads in the Blackpool Half Marathon, finishing 2nd woman and 17th overall in 77 mins 41 secs. The race also incorporated the British Vets Half Marathon Championships, and Andy Rivett continued his fine form, finishing 6th Vet and 10th overall in 75 mins 37 secs. Results from Ukroadraces.net.

19th June 2004. 2 Gold Medals in Northern Championships at Liverpool.
Several of the clubs top athletes were in action at the Northern Track and Field Championships at Liverpool, with the in form Suzanne Roberts and Charlene Snelgrove winning the Womens Hammer and 800m respectively. There were several other finalists from the club, but no other medallists, but it was good to see international cross country runner Aine Hoban back on the track, and she was just outside the medals, finishing 4th in the Womens 1500m. 15th Jun 2004. Team finish 2nd in the 5th Yorkshire Vets League race.
In the 5th of the 9 fixtures in the league at Starbeck, near Harrogate, the team finished 2nd behind league leaders Knavesmire. Steve Tibbs was again our leading runner in 3rd, and was followed home by Dave Brailsford in 9th and Richard West in 16th. The team remain in second place in the league. Denise Tibbs had a fine run to finish 6th lady. Results from YVAA.

12/13th June 2004. Naida Bromley finishes third in AAA U20 Heptathlon in New Club Record.
In her first year in the U20 age group, Naida easily scored a New Club U20 Heptathlon Record of 4,855 points when finishing in third place in the AAA U20 Championships at Stoke on Trent. Her excellent performances in the 7 disciplines were 100m Hurdles 15.18s/+2.1, High Jump 1.64m, Shot 10.46m, 200m 26.07s/+2.8, Long Jump 5.20m/+1.5, Javelin 36.39m, and 800m 2min 30.13s.

13th June 2004. Harriers teams finish 3rd and 5th in Millenium Way Relay.
The strong Vets team finished 3rd overall, and would have been 2nd in their best ever time but for a mix up at one of the changeovers, but still won the vets team prize comfortably. The open team improved considerably over last year and were not too far behind in 5th. Results from St.Bedes AC.

12th June 2004. Jack's boys win 4 titles in West Yorkshire Schools Championships.
There were many fine performances from club members whilst representing their schools in the West Yorkshire Schools Championships at Thornes Park, but special mention should be made of coach Jack Howey, whose talented quartet of U17 runners each won an Intermediate Boys title - Paul Rice (800m), Nathan Elliot (1500m), Chris Price (3000m) and John Rice (1500m Steeplechase)

10th June 2004. Steve Tibbs second home in Full Bronte 5.
Steve had another good run to finish 2nd overall, and 2nd vet, in this tough 5 mile road race at Haworth, which incorporated the Yorkshire Vets 5 Mile Championships.

9th June 2004. Good Turnout at fourth WYTF League Meeting at Wakefield.
No league records this time, but a good turnout at Thornes Park. The men now have a clear lead in this league, whilst the women lie second overall after 4 meetings. Results from Thornes Park

6th June 2004. Chris Kirk competes for GB U20 team in Loughborough International.
Long Jump star Chris Kirk gained another international vest when competing for the Great Britain U20 team in the Loughborough International. He finished 3rd with a distance of 7.21m. Suzanne Roberts was representing Loughborough Students and threw a fine 58.41m in the Hammer, whilst Zara Hohn, competing in an invitation race, ran a New Club U20 & U17 100m Hurdles Record of 14.35s.

6th June 2004. Young Athletes Second in League match at Jarrow.
The Young Athletes team had another good result, coming second in the second league match in the Northern Division 1E. Again there were many fine individual performances, with Wakefield's Twidale (U15 Boys JT), Harrison (U15 Girls 100m & 200m) and Wilson (U15 Girls 75H & LJ) winning Athlete of the Match awards for their winning performances.

5th June 2004. Ladies finish 2nd in first UK Womens League Meeting at Barnet.
Despite the absence of several key athletes through injury and work commitments, Wakefield made a good start in their quest to return to the top division with a fine 2nd place. The star performance was by Charlene Snelgrove who front ran a New Club 800m Record of 2 min 04.03 secs. Caroline Nutt was the club's only other 'A' string winner in the Pole Vault, but there were many other fine performances, with good second places from Penny Thackray in the 3000m and Suzanne Roberts in the Hammer, and several 'B' string wins. U20 international Heptathlete Naida Bromley made her senior team debut, scoring well in several events, and several athletes competed in unfamiliar events to score the vital points that helped the team to 2nd place.

5th June 2004. Another Victory in North of England League match at Wakefield.
The combined mens and womens team had another clear win in the division 2EC North of England League home fixture at Thornes Park. The men had just two 'A' string victories, from Mark Keeler in the Discus and Mark Lindsay in the Javelin, whilst young Nathan Elliot was close to the club U17 record in the 800m. For the women Angie Dickie and Shirley Griffiths won both 1500m races, and there was another double victory from Lucy Gorman and Eileen Mannion in the 3000m. Emily Mason and Alison Hackney won the 100m & 400m Hurdles events, and Sarah Drake took the Hammer.

30/31st May 2004. Suzanne Roberts Wins Inter-Counties Championships.
Representing Yorkshire, Suzanne continued her fine early season form by winning the Inter-Counties Championships in the Hammer, with 58.03m. U20 Chris Kirk finished second with 7.56m for the Men in the Long Jump, just behind the winner, helping Yorkshire to team victory. Helen Singleton was also competing for Yorkshire in the 1500m, finishing 10th.

29/30th May 2004. Wakefield Athletes win Four Northern Junior Titles at Wigan.
There were many fine performances, including two club records, in the NoE AA Junior T&F Championships at Wigan. Star of the championships with 2 golds was Chloe Beckett, who won the U17 Discus and Javelin titles, but there were also victories for Debbie Collinson (U20 Javelin) and Alison Hackney, who won the U20 400mH in a New Club Record of 65.25s. Silver medals were won by Debbie Collinson (U20 Shot) and Zara Hohn (U17 80mH), and bronze medals by Laura Whittingham (U20 Javelin) and Joanna Hackney (U17 LJ). The Hackney family completed their successful weekend when young Rosie ran a New U13 Club 100m record of 13.14s in the heats of the U15 Girls 100m. Full Results from Wigan from the NoEAA.

30th May 2004. Team victory in Yorkshire Vets League at Walton.
In our home fixture at Haw Park woods near Walton there was a slightly disappointing turnout, due to the Bank Holiday, but the team capitalised with a clear team victory over Knavesmire and Holmfirth. Steve Tibbs and Adam Cooper pushed Longwoods Dave Hinchcliffe, but had to settle for 2nd and 3rd. Backed up by Dave Brailsford in 5th and Steve Wilkinson in 8th the team finished first, and now move into second place in the league after four races. Results from YVAA.

23rd May 2004. Another excellent team result from the Girls in National Junior League.
In the second match of the National Junior League Northern Premier division at Birmingham, the girls team had another excellent result, finishing third team again. Although there were no individual A string winners this time there was a solid team performance throughout, with many 2nd and 3rd places, particularly in the field. The highlight though was a New Club U20 100mH record of 14.5s by Zara Hohn, even more remarkable as she is an U17.

19th May 2004. 2 more records set at third WYTF League Meeting at Wakefield.
The star performer of the evening was Spenborough's prodigiously talented Shannon Greenwood, who improved two of her U11 league records ! Results from Thornes Park

16th May 2004. Surprise team victory for men in Sandal Castle 10K.
There was another record turnout in this this popular off-road race, won once again by former international fell runner Richard Findlow of Bradford. The club won the mens team race, with the surprise return to competition of Andy Rivett and Craig Hepponstall, and the ever reliable Adam Cooper. Indeed Andy was a revelation. Now a vet, he finished a magnificent 4th place in what for him must have seemed like a sprint race after his ultra-distance running heroics of recent years. 15-16th May 2004. Suzanne Roberts makes winning return in Yorkshire Championships.
After missing all last year through injury 2002 Commonwealth Games representative Suzanne Roberts returned to competition and smashed the Championship Record with an outstanding Hammer throw of 60.31m. In the Senior Mens Long Jump Chris Kirk was a clear winner with 7.35m, and James Davies won the 400m in 48.6s. Other gold medallists from the club were Penny Thackray (Womens 300m), Ruth Dales (Womens 100mH), Craig Simpson (U15 Boys 100m & 200m), Rosie Hackney (U13 Girls 80m & LJ), Zara Hohn (U17 Ladies 100m) and Chloe Beckett with 4 golds! (U17 Discus, Hammer & Javelin as well as the Senior Ladies Discus). In the U15 Girls Katie McHale equalled the Club 800m Record of 2min 21.3s. Full Results.

9th May 2004. Young Athletes win opening League match at Scunthorpe.
The Young Athletes team had an encouraging start to the season, winning the first match in the Northern Division 1E, and with many fine individual performances.
Paul Rice had two excellent victories in the U17 400m and 800m, and Craig Simpson had a good win in the U15 200m. For the girls Zara Hohn easily won the U17 100m and 80mH, and there were several other good U17 & U15 victories. However the Athlete of the Match was Rosie Hackney, who as well as winning the 75m and LJ won the 150m in a New Club Record of 19.7s
Team Result :- Wakefield 413, Scunthorpe 352, Hallamshire 326, Elswick 61.

9th May 2004. Solid team performance in Yorkshire Vets League at York.
There was a good turnout from the club in the 3rd fixture, with Steve Tibbs again leading the team home with a fine 5th place. Backed up by Dave Brailsford, Steve Wilkinson and Peter Young the team finished 3rd, and are now 3rd in the league after three races. Results from YVAA.

1st-3rd May 2004. Silver medal for Charlene Snelgrove in British Universities Championships.
Charlene finished an excellent 2nd in the 1500m at the BUSF Championships at Gateshead in 4min 30.4, and there were also fine performances from Fiona Westwood, 5th in the Long Jump with 5.58m, and Ruth Dales, 7th in the 100m Hurdles in 14.7s.

2nd May 2004. Steve Tibbs first vet home in Sheffield Half-Marathon.
In warm conditions Steve had another solid performance to finish 14th overall, and first vet, in the Sheffield Half-Marathon, in a time of 76 mins 13 secs. Race Results from Ian Thomas

1st May 2004. Victory in first North of England League match at Hull.
Competing in the first match of the season for the new combined mens and womens North of England League, the club were comfortable winners of the division 2EC match at Hull.
For the men junior international Chris Kirk had a double victory in the Long and High Jumps, and young Paul Rice was again inside 2 mins for the 800m. For the women Angie Dickie easily won the 3000m, and there were also 'A' string victories for Louise Lisseman (400mH), Tiffany Lyons (1.65m HJ, not too far off the club U17 record), Fiona Thomas (SP) and Debbie Collinson (JT).

28th April 2004. New record set at second WYTF League Meeting at Cleckheaton.
The outstanding performance was a new U11 Shot record from Spenborough's prolific Shannon Greenwood, who now holds 3 of the 4 U11 league records ! For Wakefield Lucy Holmes won the U13 80m, Michaela Harrison the U15 200m, and Katie McHale the U15 800m just 3 secs off the club record. 25th April 2004. Good Start by the Girls in National Junior League.
In the first match of the National Junior League Northern Premier division, which the club hosted at Thornes Park, the girls team had an excellent start, finishing third team. The field event athletes were in fine form, with the best results coming in the Shot, with a double victory from Debbie Collinson and Chloe Beckett. Muti-eventer Naida Bromley scored well in several events, including 2nd in the 400H and Javelin.

24th April 2004. Fast 800m times at the Sheffield Open.
Paul Rice cracked the 2min barrier in the U17 800m with 1min 59.2, with clubmate Nathan Elliot not far behind with 2min 00.2. Helen Singleton recorded a useful 2min 14.0 in the womens 800m, and Katie McHale ran 2min 24.3 in the U15 race.

18th April 2004. Good Turnout and some Fine Performances at the Wakefield Open.
There were several fine performances from Wakefield athletes, including a first sub 2min 800m from U17 runner Nathan Elliot, and a 1.60m High Jump from U17 Tiffany Lyons, but the highlight was a New Club U13 100m Record of 13.7 from Rosie Hackney. 18th April 2004. New Womens Club Marathon Record for Eileen Mannion at London.
Eileen ran a very successful first marathon, running a New Club Record of 3hrs 6mins 28secs in the very wet and sometimes unpleasant conditions. Husband Nick also ran well to break 3 hours, but there was a poor turnout from the club this year, with only 6 athletes making the start line. Other Wakefield finishers were Denise Green, Jane Senior and David Marsh.

4th April 2004. Good turn out in Wakefield Hospice City 10k.
This popular race round the city centre didn't attract many star runners this year, but had 850 enthusiastic participants. Steve Tibbs and Adam Cooper resumed their battle to be the first Wakefield Harrier, and Steve again came out on top, finishing 8th as well as coming home first vet. Adam was ninth and second vet, and with young Nathan Elliott in 18th the team finished 2nd.
Penny Thackray came 2nd in the ladies race, and with Sharon Marshall 3rd and Eileen Mannion 8th, and 3rd lady vet, the Wakefield ladies won yet another team prize.

3rd April 2004. New records set at first WYTF League Meeting at York.
There were 3 new league records at this meeting, with Wakefield's Lewis Tatt equalling the U17 mens long-standing 200m record, as well as winning the 100m. Also in the U17s there was a fine winning run in the 800m from Paul Rice. James Mitchell had two victories in the U15 boys 100m and 80m Hurdles, and Richard Higson-Blythe had two sprint victories in the senior mens.
