2003 Club News July - September

27th September 2003. The Senior Ladies finish 6th in Northern 4-Stage Road Relays. Although not at full strength the team consisting of Penny Thackray (11:44), Sarah Beevers (12:14), A Tomkinson (12:57) and Shirley Griffiths (12:20) did well to finish 6th at Warrington and qualify for the National Relays. 21st September 2003. Julie O'Mara trims Club Half Marathon record in Great North Run.
Julie finished 14th in the elite women's race where Paula Radcliffe ran the quickest ever Half Marathon, and trimmed her best time and Club Record by 1 second to 78 min 5 secs. Sharon Marshall and Angie Dickie also ran in the elite race.

21st September 2003. Craig Simpson breaks club U13 Boys 200m record.
In the Club Championships Craig broke Paul Sampson's long standing U13 Boys 200m Club Record with 26.5 secs. As Paul holds the senior and U20 100m records and became English Schools 100m champion in 1996, before becoming a rugby international, Craig is clearly a talent to watch for the future.

20/21 September 2003. Naida Bromley wins English Schools Heptathlon Championships.
In the English Schools Combined Events Championships at Don Valley Sheffield Naida won the Intermediate Girls Heptathlon title by over 300 points, to complete what has been a perfect season for her in the multi-events. She improved her best yet again, breaking for the third time this season the Club Record with 4755 points. ES Results from Sheffield.

7th September 2003. U20 Women finish 6th in National Junior League Final.
The U20 women's team capped a successful season by finishing 6th in the National Junior League Final at Derby. With Naida on international duty and Aine not available the team were without 2 of their stars, but still performed well to finish 6th team in the UK.

6/7th September 2003. Naida Bromley selected for England.
In the British Isles Combined Events Cup at Wrexham, Naida won her first international vest, representing England in the U17 Heptathlon. She maintained her unbeaten record in the age group with 4602 points. Everyone at the club congratulates Naida on her achievment.

1st September 2003. New web pages for Junior Jets
A new web-site dedicated to the Wakefield Junior Jets, now added to the Links page.

31st August 2003. Vets team triumph in Leeds Country Way Relay.
Wakefield's team of 12 veteran runners, running in pairs, regained the veterans prize in this relay which they last won in 1999. Having also won the Bradford Millenium Way Relay, and being on the verge of winning the Yorkshire Veterans League again, this is turning into the most successful season for the team.

31st August 2003. WYTF Championships. Several new Championship best performances, including 2 outstanding new senior men's throwing records. Results from Cleckheaton

24th August 2003. Women's team retain Northern Inter-Club Cup.
With a team filled with many U20 and U17 athletes the club easily retained their trophy, and finished well clear of the opposition. There were several PBs, including a sparkling 100m Hurdles from Ruth Dales in 14.18.

12th August 2003. Aine Hoban improves Club U20 3000m record in Stretford races.
Several of the club's distance runners were in action at the Trafford Grand Prix races at Stretford. Best performance was by Aine Hoban, who improved her U20 3000m Club Record to 9m 32.15 in the 3000m mixed race. Her times in the 3000m this year also improve the senior record of Shirley Griffiths.

9/10th August 2003. Naida Bromley wins AAA U17 Heptathlon Title in New Club Record.
In the AAA Combined Events Championships at the Alexander Stadium, Birmingham, Naida won the U17 Heptathlon title for the second year running. She improved her best yet again, breaking her own Club Record with 4749 points.

10th August 2003. Final WYTF League Meeting. In the 7th and final League fixture there were 2 new league records in the U13 Girls Shot and U11 Girls Long Jump. In the final table Wakefield had a narrow victory over Leeds City in the Women's league, but in the Men's league we had to settle for 2nd behind Pudsey and Bramley. Results from Wakefield

6th August 2003. Another team victory in Yorkshire Vets League.
In the 7th league race at Pudsey Dave Brailsford led the team home in 6th place. With Richard West, Steve Wilkinson and Tony Audsley packing well the team again won the team race, and extended their lead in the league title race.

3rd August 2003. Final UK Women's League. In the 3rd and final League match at Grangemouth there was disappointment for the club when the gallant Women's team finished 8th, and so were relegated back to the 2nd division again. Team Manager Jack Howey had a difficult job this year with many of his stars injured or unavailable, but with many fine junior athletes coming through the club is hoping for swift return to the top flight.

3rd August 2003. Men's Northern League. In the final League match at Boston there was further disappointment as the men also finished last, and so were relegated back to the 3rd division. The only bright spark from a depleted team was another 7m+ long jump from Chris Kirk.

3rd August 2003. Women's Northern League. In the final League match at York the Ladies completed a clean sweep of victories in all 4 matches. Best performance was the Discus winning throw of 36.91m by Chloe Beckett, who broke Sharon Bedford's longstanding U17 Club Discus Record. It also bettered her own recent U20 record too.

26th July 2003. Charlene Snelgrove 5th in AAA Championships.
Charlene ran a typically gutsy race, leading until the 600m mark, to finish just outside the medals in the AAA Championships at Birmingham. Her time of 2m 5.63s was very close to her best. With most of the club's other leading athletes out of action or injured we didn't have many representatives this year, but Sarah Beevers ran superbly in the 2000m Steeplechase, finishing 10th in a New Club Record of 7m 12.31s.

25th July 2003. Chris Kirk & Aine Hoban both finish 6th in European U20 Championships.
English Schools and AAA U20 champion Chris Kirk put in another great performance to finish 6th in the Long Jump at the European U20 Championships in Tampere, Finland, with a leap of 7.47m. And Aine smashed her personal best to run another new club U20 5000m record of 16 min 22.8s. This also breaks Penny Thackray's Senior club record as well, so congratulations to her for an outstanding run. Report of day 2 from UK Athletics.

23rd July 2003. Angie Dickie wins Doncaster 5Km in New Club Record.
Angie Dickie, Julie O'Mara, Sharon Marshall and Alex Tomkinson took the first 4 ladies places in the Doncaster Town Centre 5Km Road Race, Angie's time being a New Club Record for the distance on the road. Race Results from John Schofield

23rd July 2003. Sixth WYTF League Meeting. New league record for Andrew Staniland of Leeds in the U17 mens High Jump. Results from South Leeds

20th July 2003. Wakefield finish 4th in Yorkshire Vets Road Relays.
With a strong team hopes were high of medals, but the team didn't quite make it, finishing 4th out of over 40 teams. Rotherham were clear winners, but then it was close with just a minute covering the next six teams.

16th July 2003. Chris Kirk and Aine Hoban Selected for European U20 Championships.
The club's 2 outstanding AAA U20 champions Chris Kirk and Aine Hoban have been selected to compete for Great Britain in the European U20 Championships in Tampere, Finland on 24-27 July. Chris competes in the Long Jump, and Aine in the 5000m, and the club congratulates them on their achievement, and wishes them success. Team news from UK Athletics.

12th July 2003. James Davies 2nd in Scottish Championships.
James ran a season's best of 48.13s in the 400m to finish in 2nd place at the Scottish Championships at Scotstoun, Glasgow.

12th July 2003. Chris Kirk and Debbie Collinson win English Schools Titles.
Congratulations to Chris and Debby for winning the Senior titles at the English Schools Championships at Sheffield. For QEGS student Chris, representing West Yorkshire, it was yet another Long Jump title in what is becoming a fabulous season. His winning jump of 7.57m was well clear of the field. Senior Boys Results with some photos. Debbie was representing Humberside, and took the Senior Girls Discus with 11.63m. Senior Girls Results with some photos. Many other club members were representing West Yorkshire or other counties at the championships, and competed with distinction. In particular Chloe Beckett finished 3rd in the Intermediate Girls Discus in a New U17 Club Record of 40.34 m , and Zara Hohn finished just outside the medals and ran a New U17 Club 80m Hurdles Record of 11.44s. 5th July 2003. Ladies finish 6th in second UK Womens League Meeting at Wigan.
The team once again had several key athletes missing through injury, or on international duty, so the team did well to finish 6th, beating Birchfield and Shaftsbury Barnet. Best placed Wakefield athlete was Emily Freeman, 2nd to Susan Burnside in the 100m.

5th July 2003. Chris Kirk and Aine Hoban win U20 International vests in Italy.
Congratulations to Chris and Aine for their selection to compete for Great Britain in the U20 International against Italy in Nove. For Chris it was his first international vest, and he came 2nd in the Long Jump with 7.37m. Aine ran another PB and new club U20 1500m record in 4 min 28.7s. Match Report from UK Athletics.

5th July 2003. Charlene Snelgrove wins U23 International in Hungary.
Congratulations to Charlene, the AAA U23 Silver medallist, for gaining her first international vest for England. In the U23 international at Debrecen in Hungary she won the 800m in 2m 06.1s, close to her recent club record. Report from UK Athletics.

2nd July 2003. Fifth WYTF League Meeting.
New League record set in the U11 Girls Long Jump. Results from Cleckheaton.

1st July 2003. Club takes overall lead in Yorkshire Vets League.
In the 6th league race at Starbeck Mark Ridgway was again the club's leading runner in 4th place. With support from Richard West 16th, Steve Wilkinson 17th and Tony Audsley in 26th the team again won the team race, and now move into top spot in the league title race.
