Reebok Inter Counties
Cross Country Championships

Report by: Bryan Murray

12th February 2000 - Wollaton Park, Nottingham

Wakefield Harriers fielded five representatives at the prestigious Reebok UK Inter Counties Cross Country Championships at Wollaton Park, Nottingham.

The Harriers runners qualified for the event after finishing in the first six at the recent Yorkshire County Championships.

In the U13 girls 3000 metres event, Jasmine Kerry - in her longest race to date - acquitted herself well in the field of 330. Despite being jostled at the start line, she managed to work through the field and finished in 130th place, in a time of 12mins 9 secs.

Representing Yorkshire, Harriers duo Aine Hoban and Becky Fender fought well from an uphill start to gain a reasonable position in the U17 women's 3000m race.

Half way through the race, both were in the middle group with Hoban then deciding to up the tempo as she eventually passed 40 competitors to finish 60th out of a field of over 250. Fender, struggling with a viral infection, finished in 98th.

Laura Sheard, representing Yorkshire in the U20 women's 6000 metres, performed superbly to finish 62nd in one of the largest fields of the day.

Alex Senior and Paul Lockwood appeared in the final race of the day, the U17 men's 6000m with both among the top 50 runners at the halfway stage. But in the last quarter of the race, the fast pace took its toll on both, as each faded.

Lockwood finished in 53rd, with Senior having to settle for 89th position - but they still earned points for their team.
