North of England AA
Combined Events Championships 2000

Report by: Bryan Murray

19th - 20th May 2000 - Tynedale Stadium, Hexham

Wakefield Harriers female athletes Naida Bromley, Amy Fozzard and Ruth Laybourn produced good performances at the North of England multi-events championships at Tynedale Stadium in Hexham.

All three competed in various age groups, while other senior athletes were trying desperately to qualify for the GB team for this year's Olympic Games.

Bromley, a first year in the U15 girls, came close to the eventual winner, Stacey Flint, of Hull, as she came home a super second - to scoop a silver medal.

Fozzard, in the same age group as Bromley, produced an under-par performance in the high jump, her first event, recording 1.36 metres. In the 80m hurdles, she clocked 12.4secs and followed this up by throwing 7.94m in the shot putt. She also recorded 4.64m in the long jump, while her 800m time of 2.44.9 was her best this year.

Laybourn, in her first year in the U17 age group, was in superb form in winning the 80m hurdles, her first event - and she established a strong position over the next six events with personal bests in the high jump, hurdles, javelin and 800m. Her overall score of 3701 points was enough to claim her the gold medal, ahead of Wigan Harriers athlete Adele Oliver by 38 points.
