Barton Cross Country Open Meeting

Report by: Bryan Murray

February 2000

Wakefield Harriers athletes took part in the 20th running of the annual Barton cross country. All were hoping to do well as, for many, it will be their last cross country of the season.

Top competitor for Wakefield was Helen Singleton in the U20/senior women's race (a combined event). Singleton was the second U 17 woman home in 17 mins 06 secs. Club-mate Linda Walker was third in the 40-strong vets section in 17 mins 49 secs.

The Harriers went well in the junior/senior men's race Ian Walker finished 14th in 39 mins 01 sec, and Keith Singleton was 29th (ninth in the vets section).

Jasmine Wright figured in her second meet in successive weekends in the U13 girls' race. Looking relaxed, she finished 13th

Three Wakefield athletes, Carly Wright, Samantha Colley and Linda Hall, competed in the U15 girls' race. Hall, returning from injury, worked hard with both Wright and Colley and all three were in the leading breakaway group at halfway.

Wright sprinted away from Colley and Hall at the finish to place seventh, eighth and tenth respectively.
