2006 Club News January - March

25th March 2006. Women's Team 13th in North of England 6-Stage Road Relays.
The club were not at full strength this year, and could only manage 13th place in the end, but they did however have their moment of glory, as they were leading at the halfway stage. After a solid opening leg from Charlene Snelgrove, Penny Thackray had an outstanding leg running the 6th fastest time of the day, to take the club into the lead. Julie Briscoe maintained their lead at the end of the 3rd leg, but then the team dropped away to finish 13th. Results from Sportsoft

25th March 2006. Wakefield Harriers at the English Schools Cross Country Championships.
There were several club members representing West Yorkshire Schools in the English Schools Cross Country Championships at Mansfield. The club's highest placed finisher was Ben Homer, coming an outstanding 20th in the Junior Boys race, and 1st counter for WYS. In the Senior Boys race Nathan Elliott finished 148th, and in the Intermediate Girls race Katie McHale had an excellent run to finish 40th, and 2nd counter for WYS. Full Results from ESAA website.

19th March 2006. Success for Rob Parfrey in Adventure Racing Event.
Rob is obviously keeping fit down south, and recently let us know about a success he had, winning an Adventure Racing Event. Race Report.

12th March 2006. Steve Tibbs runs Fast Half-Marathon.
Competing in the Brentwood Half Marathon in Essex, Steve finished an excellent 8th out of 1500 runners, in the good time of 1hr 15min 58secs.

11th March 2006. Wakefield Athletes running for Yorkshire in Inter-Counties Championships.
The club had three runners competing for Yorkshire in the Inter-Counties Cross Country Championships at Wollerton Park, Nottingham. In the Senior Women's race Lucy O'Gorman had an excellent run in her first year in the senior ranks to finish 25th. Nathan Elliot was competing for the first time in the U20 age group, and did well to finished 81st, whilst Lauren Brooke was 109th in the U13 girls race.

5th March 2006. Zara Hohn wins AAA U20 Championships in New Club Record Time.
In the AAA U20 Championships at Birmingham Zara sped to 60m hurdles victory in 8.42 seconds, to smash her own U20 Club Record. It was a time which was only three-hundredths outside the Championship Best that has stood to Natasha Danvers (Croydon) since 1996, and it took her to equal eighth in the UK all-time list for the age group. It was also a New Club Senior Record, breaking Kerry Jury's time from 2003. Our congratulations go to Zara for this outstanding run.

4th March 2006. Aine Hoban Wins Indoor 5000m in the USA.
Competing in Boston again, Aine maintained the fine form she has shown all winter, winning an indoor 5000m in the excellent time of 16min 26.32s.

26th February 2006. Laura Whittingham Breaks Club Shot Putt Record Indoors.
At the BUSA Championships in Sheffield there were several club members in action for their universities. Chris Kirk continued his fine indoor form, winning the Long Jump with 7.30m. Laura Whittingham threw a New Club Shot Putt Record of 13.49m in the final round to finish 4th in the competition. This broke one of the longest standing club records, held since 1975 by Jean Atack, and our congratulations go to Laura on this fine achievement. Heptathlete Nadia Bromley finished 6th with 12.14m.

25th February 2006. Lucy O'Gorman 8th in National Cross Country Championships.
Lucy finished an outstanding 8th in the U20 race at the English National Cross Country Championships at Parliament Hill Fields, London. Julie Briscoe also had a fine run to finish 24th in the Senior Women's race. Results of all races from Sportsoft

19th February 2006. Another 60m Club Record for Emily Freeman.
Emily was competing in the UK Athletics Indoor City Challenge Final, at the EIS Arena, Sheffield, and won her race, running another PB and New Club 60m Record of 7.42 secs. Chris Kirk finished 2nd in the Long Jump with 7.26m.

19th February 2006. Julie Briscoe wins Wombwell Five Mile Road Race.
Julie was first Woman home in the local Wombwell Five, finishing in 29 mins and 8 secs, and Sharon Marshall finished 8th.

18th February 2006. International Indoor Results Round Up.
Several of our international athletes have been in action around the globe! Chris Kirk competed in an in an international meeting in Vienna, Austria, coming 4th in the Long Jump with 7.23m. Aine Hoban ran a fast 3000m in Boston, USA, finishing 3rd in 9 min 34.85s, which is close to her outdoor PB and Shirley Griffith's indoor club record. She also ran a fast 5000m in Akron, Ohio, finishing 4th in 16 mins 25.25 secs. And finally Zara Hohn ran for an International Select U20 team in the International Trophy at Cardiff, Wales, coming 3rd in the 60m Hurdles in 8.72s.

11/12th February 2006. Chris Kirk and Emily Freeman Win AAA Indoor Medals.
At the AAA Indoor Senior Championships at the Sheffield EIS Emily Freeman came 3rd in the 60m in a New Club Record of 7.43 secs, after first running that time in the first round. Chris Kirk took silver in the Men's Long Jump with an excellent 7.49m, and Laura Whittingham came 9th in the Women's Shot with 12.71m. Penny Thackray finished a fine 5th in the 3000m in 9 min 36.17 secs, but Charlene Snelgrove just missed the final of the 800m, although she still ran an encouraging 2m 6.9s. 12th February 2006. Road Runners Finish 2nd Team in Liversedge Half Marathon.
Several Harriers ran in the Liversedge Half Marathon, from Roberttown, and the leading trio of Steve Tibbs, Dave Brailsford and Michael Walsh came 12th, 17th and 20th respectively, giving them 2nd in the team race. Race Results from ukresults.net

5th February 2006. Fast Time from Penny Thackray in Dewsbury 10k.
Penny ran her fastest 10k for some time when finishing 2nd woman and 37th overall in the Dewsbury 10k, in a good time of 34 min 45 secs. Michael Walsh was the first man home from the club in 72nd place, and Sarah Beevers also ran well to finish 93rd, out of a large field of nearly 1000 runners. Race Results from Dewsbury Road Runners

5th February 2006. Vets Runners Compete in Yorkshire Vets CC Championships.
Some of the Vets runners were in action at the Yorkshire Vets Cross Country Championships at Bramley. Best performer was Dave Brailsford finishing 12th in the over 50s race, and with Keith Singleton and Stuart Anderson the over 50s team finished 7th. Stuart was 2nd in his age category. Race Results.

29th January 2006. Aine Hoban Runs Fast Indoor 5000m in USA.
Competing in the Boston Indoor Games, Aine came 5th in the 5000m running an excellent time of 16min 41.68s.

29th January 2006. Road Runners Finish 2nd Team in Woodkirk Valley 10K.
Several Harriers were in action in the Woodkirk Valley 10k, and had a close battle amongst themselves. Peter McNamara just came out on top, 3 seconds ahead of Dave Brailsford and 10 seconds ahead of Michael Walsh. The threesome came 12th, 13th and 14th, giving them 2nd in the team race, with Dave finishing first in the M50 category. Race Results from ukresults.net

29th January 2006. Chris Kirk and Emily Freeman Win Northern Indoor Titles at Sheffield.
Chris showed that he is back on form by winning the Long Jump in a New Championship Best of 7.45m, whilst Emily won the 60m in 7.50s, after equalling her recent club record of 7.45s in the heats. Other medal winners were Ruth Laybourn, 2nd in the Long Jump, and Laura Whittingham, 2nd in the Shot, whilst Ruth Dales was just outside the medals with 4th in the 60m Hurdles.

28th January 2006. Lucy O'Gorman Finishes 4th in Northern Cross Country Championships.
In the Northern Cross Country championships at Blackburn Lucy finished an excellent 4th in the U20 Women's race, just a few seconds outside the medals. In the U17 race Katie McHale and Ellie Archer were 25th and 41st respectively, whilst Lauren Brooke was 30th in the U13s, and Sarah Beevers was 36th in the Senior Women's race. 22nd January 2006. Chris Kirk and Emily Freeman Star in Scottish Indoor Championships.
Two of our international athletes got their year off to a flying start in the Scottish Indoor Championships at Glasgow. Chris Kirk won the Long Jump title with 7.07m, and our star sprinter Emily Freeman ran a New Club 60m Record of 7.45s. She actually ran that time three times on the day in the heats, semi-final and final, where she finished second. Results from Scottish Athletics.

21st/22nd January 2006. Zara Hohn wins Northern Indoor Title in Club Record Time.
In the Northern Indoor Championships at Sheffield Zara Hohn retained her U20 60m Hurdles title in a New U20 Club Record of 8.69s, the second week in succession she has broken this record. She also came second in the 60m in 7.90s. Calum Whitham performed very well to win two U15 bronze medals, running PBs in the heats of the 200m with 25.65s, and in the 60m with 7.85s. 15th January 2006. Laura Whittingham Close to Club Shot Record Again
Laura continued her fine form at the Inter-University match at Cardiff, winning the Shot for Bath University with 13.24m, very close to her PB of the previous week, and again very close to the senior club record.

14th January 2006. New Club U20 Hurdles Record for Zara Hohn.
Zara continued from where she left off last year, running another Club U20 60m Hurdles Record of 8.79 secs, in the Loughborough Open meeting. At the same meeting new U20 member Ricardo Francis gave us a glimpse of his talent by posting a fast time of 7.3s for the 60m sprint.

14th January 2006. Sprinting Comeback by Paul Sampson.
Club record holder Paul Sampson, the former English Schools 100m champion, and former England Rugby international, made a surprise appearance on the boards in the Brunel Sprint Grand Prix. He showed us that he is still very quick indeed, by running 7.10s for the 60m.

14th January 2006. Aine Hoban Second in Yorkshire Cross Country Championships.
With only one of last year's victorious team running, the club's senior women's team lost their Yorkshire Cross Country title. However Aine Hoban, on holiday from her studies in the USA, finished a fine 2nd. Lucy O'Gorman ran very well in her first senior race to finish 8th, and with Helen Singleton in 31st place the team finished 3rd this year. In the U20 men's race Nathan Elliot finished in a fine 5th place, and there were fine runs from Ellie Archer, 10th in the U17 and Lauren Brooke 5th in the U13 girls race. 8th January 2006. Laura Whittingham Close to Club Shot Record
In her first month in the senior ranks Laura got off to a great start by improving her Shot PB again, and came very close to Jean Atack's senior club record. Competing in an open meeting at Bath, her throw of 13.25m was further than Jean's outdoor record, and just 11cm less than Jean's superior indoor record. Report of meeting from UK Athletics.
