Sheffield 10k Road Race

Report by: Bryan Murray

25th March 2001 - Sheffield

Wakefield Harriers' Penny Thackray continued her streak of good form by breaking her own course record by 29 seconds in the Sheffield Lord Mayor's 10k.

It was the fifth straight success in the race for Thackray since 1997 on the back of two second place finishes in 1995 and 1996 to Jane Palmer.

Wakefield also won the women's team event, Thackray placed 11th overall and won the women's race by just over a minute in 34 mins 05 secs from fellow international Bev Jenkins of Salford AC who has been invited to run for Great Britain in Seoul, South Korea, this month.

Third woman in the race Clare Tomkinson, from the Leicester Charnwood Club and twin sister of Wakefield's Alex Tomkinson who finished tenth.

Alice Butler was the fifth woman home in front of former Olympian Jane Shields and new club member Clare Sykes (seventh but unable to count for the team).

Alex Tomkinson was therefore the third Wakefield team counter to secure a team triumph for Wakefield Harriers.

Cath Bacon was close to Tomkinson in 11th and just missed out on a team medal.
