2nd June 2001 - Thornes Park, Wakefield

The Harriers moved top of the Northern Men's League after a resounding victory at Thornes Park Athletics Stadium.

With several squad members back from injury, Wakefield's team proved to be too strong for the opposition and ended up clear match winners. The victory put the Harriers on top of the table just ahead of Durham with a superior match points difference.

Wakefield's most amazing performance was winning all eight of the sprint races. Chris Bedford and Richard Higson-Blythe won the 100m A and B races in 11.7s and 11.9s, respectively, The duo was also involved in the team's 4x100m triumph along with Mathew Young and Steve Thorpe in a speedy 45.7s. Thorpe also completed the relay double with Jonathon Shearn, Raymond Ndengeya and James Davies with 3:33.9 in the 4x400m.

The prolific Bedford completed the sprint double with 23.3s in the 200m A and Matthew Young won the B race in the same time. In the 400m A Davies was the fastest with 49.4s and Shearn took the B race with 52.5s.

The throwing events were also a major source of match points for Wakefield with Anthony Swain following his success at Stafford with a winning hammer throw of 54.63m. Robert Taylor won the B event with 46.61m. And Chris Carlton claimed victory in the B shot putt competition with 10.83m.

The Harriers were strong in every department in track and field with Steve Faulkner winning the 800m B in 2 mins 03.2 secs and Craig Heppenstall the 1500m A in 4 mins 12.2 secs. Nick Mannion won the gruelling 5000m race in an impressive 16:48.1s, while Garry Slade's 12.49m triple jump proved to be the longest leap.

Wakefield District Harriers and AC promoted the event and was supported by Wakefield Council.
