Northern Mens League Division 2NEReport & Results by: Mike Hewitt - Senior Men's Team Manager
7th July 2001 - Carlisle
Wakefield had a weakened team due to the absence of some key performers due to English Schools duties and a wedding! However 12 team members travelled to Carlisle on the Friday night and were joined by two car loads on Saturday morning to contest the 3rd of this 4 match league.
In a close match Wakefield finished 3rd, probably the best result that could be hoped for in the circumstances. The Hammer Throwing pair of Anthony Swain and Robert Taylor produced the ideal start, winning both the A & B of the opening event! Raymond Ndengeya proved to be a dark horse in the unfamiliar 800, winning the B event at his first try! Karl Kraus was running well in the 400 hurdles until he landed badly at hurdle 6 damaging an ankle. Although he limped home for valuable points he could not take any further part in the proceedings.
Other Wakefield athletes set PBs, especially in unfamiliar events. Congratulations to Nick Mannion who may make a triple jumper if he gives up distance running(!), to Steve Thorpe on winning his first ever NML competition in 9 years of trying(!!!) and to the whole team for their tremendous performance.
