Unavailability and injuries hindered team selection for Wakefield Harriers' Young Athletes League meeting at Thornes Park Stadium, but the team put in a stirring display and in the end were beaten by only 18 points.

In the U13 boys' section, Scott Howe was the only individual winner, claiming maximum points in the shot putt.

Nathan Elliot, in the U15 section, had two first places in the 400m B and 3,000m A. Ian Wainwright had two victories, he took the 800m then went on to win the 1500m B. Daniel Cooper and Richard Cooper won the 800m B and 1,500m A respectively. Wakefield's U15 sprint quartet won the 4x100m relay.

The depleted U17 squad still managed 11 first places, six seconds and three thirds.

Justin Howell won the 800m B, and Andrew Hall and Sam Handforth had excellent first places in the 1,500 metres A and B competitions. Mark Lindsay won the field athlete of the match award for his winning performance in the A javelin (54.24m). Chris Kirk had a brilliant double. He won the high jump with a 1.77m clearance and followed up with a 5.79m long jump victory. Charles Handley also completed a double in the hammer and shot.
