McDonald's Boys YA League

Report by: Bryan Murray

20th May 2001 - Moorways Stadium, Derby

Wakefield's boys squad produced a terrific team display in Derby despite being under strength.

Just like the first match of the season, athletes were either injured or unavailable for various reasons, but nevertheless the young Harriers rallied round to produce another second place with some outstanding displays.

U17 athlete Charles Handley won the hammer event with 42.18m, and team mate Mark Lindsay produced the best throw in his main event the javelin competition, with 57.76m. Carl Hayward, U15s age group, won the shot putt with 10.93m and the discus with 31.39m. Chris Lockwood made a winning return after following an appendix operation that had complications. He won the B shot and came third in the B long jump.

The club won all the relays at the conclusion of the meeting, and Ian Wainwright, U15, was voted the track athlete of the match for his 2 mins 12.5 secs in the 800m. The field honour went to Carl Hayward, U15, for his 31.39m in the discus.
