Report by:Bryan Murray

12th August 2000 - Princess Mary Stadium, Cleckheaton

The final meeting of the Complete Runner West Yorkshire Track and Field League recently took place at Cleckheaton's Princess Mary track, with Wakefield Harriers managing some good performances - despite many athletes being on holiday.

A close race in the men's 100m saw Wakefield return the first three, with Chris Bedford winning in 11.6 secs. He held off Steve Thorpe (11.8) and Robert Higson-Blythe (11.8). In the men's 400m, Thorpe finished in third spot in 55.7, with Higson-Blythe seventh in 62.1.

Martin Bernard produced a best jump in the U17 men's long jump series of 4.83m, with the competition won by Parkside's Matthew Clay, who produced an outstanding leap of 6.48m. In the discus competition, Bernard amassed good league points with second spot with an effort of 28.80m.

The race of the day was probably in the U15 800m, with the first five athletes giving the officials hard work with the placings, with Harrier Ian Wainwright fourth in 2:14.4.

John Fletcher, although troubled with a hip injury secured victory in the U15 long jump with his best effort being 5.60m. He followed this up with third spot in the shot putt, following a throw of 8.44m.

Scott Howe was placed seventh in the U13 boys high jump competition.

Michael Knighton finished fifth in the U11 75m sprint in a time of 12.3, to clinch further league points. Knighton also finished fifth in the 600m race, in a time of 2:07.03 - and in his third event, he finished third in the long jump with 3.75m.

Parkside's Fiona Barr won the women's 200m race in 27.0, closely followed by Kerry Dobson, third in 27.7. Stepping up to the two-lap 800m, Dobson recorded 2:38.4 to clinch fourth spot.

It was a good day for Sharon Pryke, who scored a double victory in the shot putt and javelin events. Pryke's effort of 10.94m won her the shot putt event ahead of Barr and she repeated the feat in the javelin, with Barr again runner-up following Pryke's throw of 27.24m.

A convincing piece of sprinting saw Laura Robinson steam home in the U15 women's 100m in 13.4 secs. Team-mate Amy Fozzard was equal fourth in 14.3.

Wakefield athletes were placed prominently in the 800m, with Zoe Gowland leading the way with second place in 2:25.6, followed by third-placed Lisa Hall (2.36.5). Fourth was Jan Faulkner (2.46.0), with Jaydene Wright sixth in 2.51.6.

Amy Fozzard was placed in both throwing events, just pipped into second following a throw of 8.91m in the shot putt and sixth in the discus with 18.04m.

Katy Shepherd was fourth in the U13 800m in 2:47.3, while Chloe Beckett recorded another league record in the discus. Beckett's winning throw of 27.44m was four metres ahead of Bethany Staniland (Skyrac AC), with Laura Teasdale securing a good-fourth place with 19.89m.

A close finish in the U11 girls 75 sprint saw Samantha Lambert finish runner-up in 10.9 secs the same time as winner Francis-Smithson, of Leeds City - with both recording a league-best performance. Michelle Harrison was fourth in 11.5.

Harrison had a fine sixth place in the 600m race, recording 2:06.0 and she followed this up with second place in the shot putt, with an effort of 5.17m.
