7th Annual Tartan Games & Open Meeting

Report by: Bryan Murray

27th August 2000 - Gateshead

Several Wakefield Harriers athletes had a successful day at the recent Tartan Games at Gateshead - despite the continuous rain and poor conditions.

U13 athlete Danielle Welsh won the cricket ball throw, a clear three metres ahead of second-placed Rachel Lazenby (Morpeth) with a best throw of 36.70m. Lazenby's top effort was 33.27m.

In the U15 girl's group sprints, Laura Robinson and Nicole Welsh progressed through the heats into both finals. Robinson was a clear winner in 13.3 secs, with Welsh holding firm for second in 13.5. A good bend run from Robinson, coming into the straight in the longer sprint, enabled her to win comfortably in 26.75 secs - a good double sprint one and two for the Wakefield club.

Another sprint double came from Nicole Crosby, who won both the 100m and 200m in the senior ladies age group. Crosby recorded 12.33 secs in the 100m sprint and over the longer 200m distance, she notched a time of 25.11 secs yet another fine double victory for Crosby.

In the senior ladies triple jump Kelly Brow performed well, with the best in his series of jumps being an effort of 10.72m enough to place her second.

Martyn Bernard, competing in the U17 mens high jump, won his event with a great performance of 1.92m in a rainsoaked high jump area.
