Northern Mens League
Division 2SE

Report by:Bryan Murray

3rd June 2000 - North Kesteven Stadium, Grantham

Wakefield Harriers men's team travelled to Grantham for their second match in Division 2 South East. The weather was ideal for all competitors, although Wakefield were weakened by late withdrawals due to injuries.

The match itself was a close affair throughout the day's track and field events.

The overall results were: 1st - Lincoln Wellington, 279 pts, 2nd - Barnsley 265 pts, 3rd Grantham 263 pts, 4th Wakefield Harriers 254 pts, 5th - Doncaster and Stainforth 249 pts, 6th Scunthorpe 152 pts.

In the triple jump event, Wakefield won both the A and B competitions, with John Uridge winning the A in 12.21 m. Gary Slade triumphed in the B in 12.08m and later went on to win the B110m hurdles.

Chris Bedford, on his return to athletics, won the B 200m race in 22.6 secs - a superb time considering the amount of injuries he has had to endure this season. He followed this up by winning the B 100m in 11.3 secs.

Wakefield scooped a number of other first places, Chris CarIton won the B shot putt event with 10.96m, while Mark Ainsworth triumphed in the B 400m in 52.7 secs.

In the relay, Wakefield finished 2nd in 44.7 secs and 3rd in the 4x400m in 3:41.4.

Worthy of a mention is Matthew Gillard, who scored heavily for Harriers in the shot putt, high jump, pole vault, discus, 400m and long jump.

A real sense of team spirit was engendered, with athletes competing in unaccustomed events such as John Hackleton and Robert Whitworth who competed in the 800m, 1500m and 5000m races.
