North of England AA Junior Championships 2000
Part 2

Report by:Bryan Murray

25th June 2000 - Robin Park Stadium, Wigan

Wakefield Harriers had several athletes competing at the North of England "Great North" Junior Championships at Robin Park, Wigan. Conditions were far from ideal, with persistent rain falling all day throughout the day's events.

In the men's U17 100m final, John Uridge was desperately unlucky not to win a medal. Mandale AC runner Vickers won the final, but behind him a blanket finish ensued, with three competitors in contention for medals.

Unfortunately, Uridge was placed 4th in the photo-finish at 11.47 secs, with third spot going to Gateshead Harriers runner Haley, who finished in 11.45secs - with the wind speed minus 0.2 metres per second.

A two-horse race developed in the men's U17 javelin final between Mark Lindsay and Lee Doran (Carlisle Aspatria). Lindsay's best effort of 56.89m won him the silver medal.

John Fletcher competed at two events at the meeting, the 200m and long jump. In heat one of the 200m, Fletcher failed to qualify for the final, finishing 6th in 25.41 secs.

Unperturbed, Fletcher excelled himself in the long jump final by claiming Wakefield's only championship victory. It was yet another head-to-head with Fletcher in opposition against Cleethorpes AC athlete Paul Twidale after both had pulled away form the rest of the field.

Fletcher pulled in a jump of 5.97m, into a 0.2m per second headwind, to win, with Twidale's best effort being 5.94m - in what was a very close competition.

Charles Handley also enjoyed medal success in the U15 boys hammer final, with his best throw of the day being 41.53m. But he could not hold off Bissell of Burnley AC, who threw 53.26m to clinch the title.

In the U17 ladies 100m, Vicky Lockwood failed to reach the final finishing in 6th place in 13.60 secs after racing into a minus 1.4m per second headwind. In the long jump final, Lockwood finished 7th, recording a best jump of 4.24m.

Sarah Drake was just pipped for a medal in the U17 hammer final. In a close competition between four athletes, Drake produced a best effort of 34.73m, to trail winner Mandale AC's Sarah Morgan (39.07m).

Two Harriers, Lisa Hall and Zoe Gowland, ran in the U15 800m heats and gave good accounts of themselves. In heat 1, Hall was 8th in 2:42.34, with Gowland 7th in heat two in 2:32.59.
