Suzanne Roberts makes Great Britain U23 debut

Press Report - 21st July 2000

Suzanne Roberts makes her international debut for Great Britain and Northern Ireland in an U23 international at Liverpool's Wavertree Stadium this weekend.

The talented 21 year old hammer thrower, formerly with Bingley Harriers, has come on leaps and bounds since joining Wakefield just over a year ago.

The Loughborough University student recently smashed her personal best of just under 50 metres on her way to the Northern title at Grantham, throwing a colossal 56.18m.

Suzanne's progression has been such that she is now the fifth ranked hammer thrower at her level in the country.

Jack Howey, team manager of the Harriers team which competes in the UK Women's Athletics League Premier Division said: "I am absolutely delighted for Suzanne. She has improved tremendously while with us and the call-up is a credit to her. Most hammer throwers progress as they get older, so Suzanne has got to have a great future."

She will be competing against rivals from France and Germany at the meeting.

Other current female internationals on Wakefield's books are Kerry Jury, second ranked heptathlete in the country behind Denise Lewis and long jumper Fiona Westwood, who made her international bow earlier this year for Great Britain against Poland.

Past female internationals include Alice Butler, Penny Thackray and Shirley Griffiths.

Press Report Update - 4th August 2000

Suzanne Roberts performed well for Great Britain's U23 team in the Norwich Union international against France and Germany at Liverpool. The accomplished hammer thrower, just 21, threw 57.05m to finish just behind the winner, Germany's Suzanne Keil at the event, held in the Wavertree Athletics Centre.
