New Balance Barnardo's Charity Road Race

Report by: Bryan Murray

10th November 2000 - Roundhay Park, Leeds

Wakefield Harriers stars were among hundreds of runners who converged on Roundhay Park, Leeds, to take up the challenge of Barnardo's popular annual race to raise money for charity. The Harriers were the first women's team to cross the line in the five-mile race.

The team comprised Penny Thackray, who was also the individual women's winner in a course record time, Sharon Marshall, who finished third overall in the women's race, and Shirley Griffiths, who was fifth woman home.

Thanks to huge interest shown in the event Barnardo's, the UK's largest children's charity, raised £3,500 to help give the region's children and young people a better future.

Backed by sports shoe specialists New Balance, all race entry fees went to Barnardo's with Lineham Farm Children's Centre in Eccup benefiting from donations and sponsorship raised by the runners.
