23rd July 2000 - Thornes Park, Wakefield

Samantha Colley - U17 3000m

Wakefield Harriers had a slim chance to reach the Auxiliary final at Birmingham ahead of their McDonald's Girls Premier League meeting at Thornes Park - the last match of three qualifying meetings.

Wakefield fielded a strong side, but due to athletes from all the clubs being unavailable for various reasons, the match was close until the final event - with Wakefield eventually having to settle for third.

High jumpers Emily Mason and Kim Nallon produced Wakefield wins in the U17 age group, collecting maximum points in the A and B competitions. U15 sprinters Laura Robinson and Nicole Welsh had a great sprint double, winning both the A and B events of the 100m and 200m.

Meanwhile, Zoe Gowland held on at the finish to win the 1500 metre race, and another Wakefield win was secured in the B long jump by Lindsey Green.

Two double wins came in the shot putt, with Chloe Beckett demolishing the field with her throw of 8.19m in the A event and clubmate Laura Teasdale won the B competition with 6.34m. Good performances came from the whole team, but it was Gateshead Harriers, fielding a strong side, who denied Wakefield a trip to Birmingham. Despite the disappointment, Wakefield will be more prepared for next season.
