McDonald's Boys YA League

Report by:Bryan Murray

4th June 2000 - Dorothy Hyman Stadium, Barnsley

Wakefield Harriers boys team travelled again this season to the Dorothy Hyman track at Cudworth for a meeting in the National Young Athletes League.

Due to injuries and unavailability of some athletes, the youth's age group was much understrength, with the only winner in the U13 section being James Richardson in the B shot putt event. He was backed up by several second places in the track and field events.

The U15 boys managed to field a much stronger team and had several triumphs, with good wins coming from William Maddock in the A 400m and Sam Handforth in the B 800m.

A double victory for the club also saw twins Richard and Daniel Cooper win the A and B 80m hurdles.

In the field, Maddock won again, in the high jump, while John Fletcher was in top form in the long jump - winning the man of the match award with his leap of 5.71 m.

Edward Beaumont also did well, winning the B shot putt, while James Fox was successful in the B discus.

Martin Bernard jumped 1.80m to win the U17 men's high jump competition and Mark Lindsay's throw of just under 50m won him the javelin.

Match result: 1st Barnsley 228; 2nd Morpeth 172; 3rd Wakefield 135; 4th Shildon 56.
