ESAA Track & Field Championships 2000

Report by: Bryan Murray

7th & 8th July 2000 - Don Valley Stadium, Sheffield

Several Harriers athletes were on show for West Yorkshire Schools at the English Schools Championships at Don Valley Stadium.

James Wild, participating in a top-quality senior boys high jump final, jumped 1.98m to finish in fifth place.

The inter-boys javelin final was a close affair, with Mark Lindsay just missing out on winning the gold medal. Lindsay's best throw, 54.72m, put him into the bronze medal place. Lee Doran finished first with 56.15m, with Alex Van der Merwe second with 55.92m.

In the junior boys' long jump, John Fletcher qualified in second place from round one following a super jump of 5.97m. The final was another top-quality competition, with the first three athletes all jumping in excess of six metres.

However, Fletcher was plagued with forward rotation problems, and did not do himself justice after his great display in the qualifying competition as he finished in the final with 5.55m.

In the senior girls javelin final, Michelle Lonsdale, still improving after her long injury layoff, responded with a good display to snatch a silver medal just pipping Georgina Hodgson by several centimetres with 40.63m.

Laura Robinson progressed to the semi-final of the juniors girls' 200m after finishing second in heat two, with a time of 26.16 secs. In the second semi-final race, Robinson was unable to progress as she finished in sixth place following a time of 26.17 secs.
