AAA U17 & U15 Championships

Report by: Bryan Murray

29th - 30th July 2000 - Don Valley Stadium, Sheffield

Wakefield Harriers made the short trip down the M1 to compete in the AAA U17 championships at Don Valley Stadium, Sheffield.

In the U17 men's javelin final, Mark Lindsay and Alex Van der Merwe fought it out for gold and silver, with the rest of the field left to battle for the bronze medal. Van der Merwe was eventually victorious, throwing 59.08m to take the title. Lindsay, who has been in outstanding form all season, had to settle for a silver medal, following a throw of 58.69m.

Wakefield had two female athletes in the 100m and 200m events. In the 100m heats, Laura Robinson was placed fifth in 12.91 - in heat one. Nicole Welsh, running in heat three, was seventh in 13.24secs.

Over the 200m, both Nicole and Laura gave good performances, Nicole recording 26.84 in her heat. Laura qualified for the semi-final with 26.53 and then she went even faster - notching 26.19 in the semi-final, to unluckily finish outside the qualifying positions.
