Christmas Handicaps
18th December 2003 - Thornes Park
The Annual Christmas Handicap race was this year run in cold and icy conditions, but we still had 22 competitors, some taking
part for the first time. A new innovation this year was ending the race with a lap of the track, and this provided an exciting
finish for the spectators. Pete McNamara was first onto the track, and it looked as though he was going to repeat last
year's win. However young Nathan Elliot was only 30m behind and closing fast, with fellow U17 Chris Price, and Tony Smith
in hot pursuit. Nathan took the lead coming off the final bend, with Peter holding onto 2nd place, and Chris taking 3rd.
With just 10 seconds covering the first 4 it was one of the closest finishes we have had. Mark Ridgway and Adam Cooper
were next, followed home by the first lady Sharon Marshall.
U17 Nathan also set the fastest time of the night, with Sharon fastest lady, just 18 seconds faster than Helen Singleton
over the 4.5 mile course.
