Wakefield Harriers

Wakefield Harriers Trip to Castres 2008

Wakefield's twin town in France, Castres, have asked if Wakefield Harriers would like to send teams to take part in a relay race on Sunday 3rd February. They have said they will give us free entry, and will kindly try and fix us up with accommodation, so all it would cost us is our travel.

The race is a multi-terrain long distance relay race, with teams of 4 senior runners (minimum age 18), where the legs are of distances between 14 Km and 20 Km. This is a long established and popular race that has been going since 1983, and last year there were 315 teams competing ! Details of the event can be found on their race website.

The only suitable flights for that weekend are with Ryanair from East Midlands to Carcassonne, which leaves East Midlands on Friday 1st Feb at 06:55, and returns from Carcassonne on Monday 4th Feb at 10:30. They seem to be the the only possibilities, and are still fairly cheap, although as more people book the prices are steadily going up !

Our hosts have offered to pick us up and return us to Carcassonne airport, give us free entry to the race, and to give us lodging with families. Those who prefer to stay in a hotel can do so at their own expense, but it will be a great opportunity to experience French hospitality, and to make new friends. Castres is a nice town, and here's the website of the Castres Tourist Office. We also planning a visit to the historic Old City of Carcassonne on the first day, a spectacular world heritage site.

So far 17 runners have booked to go, plus 3 partners, and I hope more can come as well. If anyone else wishes to come then please email Peter Young as soon as possible, so I can let our hosts know.

Thanks, Peter
