Group Training Sessions

For the senior distance runners not receiving individual coaching, the following group training sessions are organised for runners of all abilities. This table will be updated monthly, so please check regularly, as the venue of the weekend sessions will change from month to month. A brief description of each session type is given at the bottom of the page. Please note that there will be no formal weekend training sessions when there are important team races or Distance League events.

The Tuesday night sessions at the club are usually Road Intervals around or near the stadium in winter, and are suitable for all abilities, splitting up into separate groups for some of the sessions. In summer there will be regular Hill Sessions in the park, and other Interval Sessions. Each of the sessions will usually involve 20 - 25 minutes of fast running in total, during the efforts, with a short warm up and warm down run before and after the efforts. Leave 7 pm prompt from Thornes Park Stadium.

The Thursday night session at the club is a Steady Run of around 60 minutes, starting and finishing at the stadium. Group leaders will try and ensure there is a group running at a pace to suit all abilities. Start 7 pm prompt from Thornes Park Stadium.

We've agreed on 8 regular road runs for the winter months that we'll do in rotation, as follows :-

Winter Run 2 - Bradford Rd, Potovens Rd, Canal Ln, Baker Ln, Stanley, Aberford Rd
Winter Run 3 - Denby Dale Rd, Crigglestone, Hall Green, Newmillerdam, Barnsley Rd
Winter Run 4 - Dewsbury Rd, Kingsway, Ossett, Horbury, Horbury Rd
Winter Run 5 - Doncaster Rd, New Relief Rd, Ferry Lane, Stanley, Aberford Rd
Winter Run 6 - Horbury Rd, Navigation, Blacker Ln, Crigglestone, Standbridge Ln, Asdale
Winter Run 7 - Bradford Rd, Brandy Carr Rd, Kirkhamgate, Batley Rd, Alverthorpe Rd
Winter Run 8 - Chantry Bridge, Barnsley Rd, Chevet Ln, Woodthorpe Ln, Pledwick, Asdale

Once British Summer Time starts then we'll do the following mainly off-road runs in rotation :-
Summer Run 1 - Chantry Bridge, Riverbank, Blue Bridge, Stanley Ferry, Golf Course, Redhall Lane & Wrenthorpe Park.
Summer Run 2 - Denby Dale Rd, River & Canal to Navigation, up to Blacker Lane, down Balk Lane, back along other side of River.
Summer Run 3 - Sandal Castle, Sandal & Agbrigg Station, Walton Colliery, back via Canal, Belle Vue & Doncaster Rd.
Summer Run 4 - Chantry Bridge, Riverbank, Heath Common, Kirkthorpe Village, back along Riverbank.
Summer Run 5 - Flanshaw, Low Laithes, Tufty Farm, Lindale Lane & Wrenthorpe Park.
Summer Run 6 - Sandal Castle, Chevet Lane, Golf Course, Newmillerdam, Asda, Pugneys.

The Sunday morning session is a Long Easy Run off-road for about 80 - 90 minutes. The venue of this run will vary from month to month to give variety, and starts at 9 am. It is suggested that those who wish to go further do extra miles before or after the group run.
